BSB 3FG% Deep Dive

Published on 17 December 2021 at 14:42

A question was brought up to us on Bobcat Nation this week about 3FG% now that the distance has changed from 20’9 to the international distance of 22’1 &¾ . We went back to the last year of the 3 for women’s basketball being at 19’9 (2010-11) up to this year with about a third of the season being completed.

  • Are the best teams shooting at the same pace as the best teams from the last couple of years from the arc?
  • Are the individual conference leaders still up to the level of the last couple of years?

Here is what we found. In 2010-11 the last year of the 19’9 distance the league average from 3FG% was 31.7%, MSU was the best shooting team from 3FG% at 37.7% and the top shooter was Lyndi Seidensticker for MSU shooting at 42.1%.

In 2011-12 the distance was moved to 20’9 and the highest league average was 32.5% in 2017-18 with Idaho leading the league at 37.2% and Estefania Ors from ISU was the leading 3FG% shooter at 47%. The lowest years average was 2014-15 with the league average being a deep dive low of 27.4%, and the highest individual 3FG% was Savanna Scott from UNC shooting 44.3%

This year with the distance moved back to the international distance…one would think the numbers would dip significantly, but the league is shooting  30.7% with NAU shooting the best 3FG%  at 38.7%, PSU at 35.3%, and SAC at 33.5% all numbers higher than any of the league averages in our deep dive. Individually the numbers are higher than any other year. Nina Radford from NAU is shooting 55.2%, Tiana Johnson 54.8%, Jessica Rios 45.8%, Emily Rodabaugh 44%, and Hannah Simental at 38.9%. We imagine these numbers will level out and even see new names in this list as the first half of the league comes to an end in January. We will dive into the numbers again at that time and a final time after the regular season concludes just before the conference tourney.
